The importance of good SEO for start-ups

Your new company is at the starting blocks, and you want to share that with as many people as possible. SEO helps tell your start-up’s story. But don’t be intimidated by the scale of SEO. You can eventually reach the same goal with small steps.

Tip

Doing something is always better than doing nothing: for example, start by setting up a blog to inform your new customers. You can then use this content on other channels like a newsletter or social media. This way, a small investment leads to a big result. You decide the pace of your SEO strategy yourself.

Ready for the start(-up) in SEO?

SEO is a fascinating story. The subject is always the same: scoring with top results. In our white papers below, you’ll discover all the relevant key players helping to write your unique business story. Because SEO helps every entrepreneur move forward, whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional.

SEO as a well-founded strategy for your start-up

As a new company, you start from zero when it comes to brand awareness or authority, both with physical customers and online visitors. The growth of that online image doesn’t happen overnight. Compare it to a seed that you carefully plant and water regularly. Only then will you eventually reap the fruits of that beautiful SEO tree.

Don’t have the patience? Want to enjoy that juicy SEO fruit right away? Then SEA is also an option. You speed up the growth of your little tree by giving it chemical fertilizer. Your fruits grow faster and satisfy your hunger immediately. But beware: if you stop fertilizing, your growth stops immediately too.

As you can see in the image, the benefits of SEO stack up. They start small but create more impact step by step. Feel free to compare it to the classic snowball effect.

SEO vs SEA

Why choose SEO

As a start-up entrepreneur, are you willing to invest first and see results later? Then the long-term strategy of SEO fits perfectly with your business philosophy.

The beginning is fairly easy: you create a page, write a bunch of SEO texts, and they stay there. That’s it. But of course, it’s a bit more complex than that. Swap those goggles for reading glasses and stay sharp.

Optimize your content regularly, look for new keywords or synonyms, and implement them on your website. Are there new relevant keywords you haven’t included in your texts yet? Content remains a vital part of your SEO performance. As an entrepreneur, you always play the lead role in this.

A good SEO strategy influences your conversion rate. Adjust the user experience of your website by focusing on conversion optimization. This way, you attract more visitors, they stay on your page longer, and they take action faster. Make sure your website reflects the atmosphere of your company. For instance, a lawyer’s site is completely different from a toy store’s.

Why we sometimes advise against SEO

SEO is always a good choice 😉. But in some cases, as a start-up, it’s better to choose a different strategy first. Has your company just started and do you need new customers almost immediately? Then we advise against SEO. This strategy focuses primarily on long-term results. In that case, you’re better off running some paid ads that offer immediate results. But in the meantime, definitely set up your Google Search Console. That way, you start gathering important data right from the beginning.

Or does your company offer a brand-new service or product that is still completely unknown to the general public? Then SEO isn’t the best strategy for your start-up. It is impossible to create new demand with it. Instead, try to hook into an existing demand and keyword. What do visitors want to achieve, and how do I link my product to their question?

For example: your company offers a mobile car wash, a service that is relatively unknown and therefore doesn’t have a large search volume. By tapping into the needs of potential customers, you reach them via a detour. They use keywords like ‘car wash’ and ‘nearby’. Your business meets their demand, namely: where can I clean my car in my area? Solution: your mobile car wash service. Both searches contain the same search intent (I want to clean my car), but you reach them through different keywords.

The difference between SEO for start-ups and established companies

As a start-up, you hold a golden joker. If you choose to have a new website made, take the opportunity to build a site with an SEO label. Base it on essential foundations like a rock-solid, user-friendly structure and impressive loading speeds. Also, make sure it’s clear to visitors where they can find what information. A maze is only fun if you choose to be in one.

5 tips to stand out as a start-up

While the image of established companies provides a good basis for their digital footprint, they often still work with websites that lack a clear structure. Or they focus too little on relevant keywords and thus miss out on the benefits of their already established reputation.

Get off to a flying start as a start-up with these 5 tips:

  1. Start by setting up Google Search Console so you don’t lose any important data.
  2. Don’t focus on high-volume keywords, or you’ll get lost in the crowd. Start at the bottom of the pyramid, very broad. Then build content step by step and refine your keyword. Always keep your ultimate goal (a relevant keyword with massive search volume) in mind. Create a page focusing on your ultimate high-volume keyword anyway. This gives the page a chance to grow within the search results.
  3. Use long-tail keywords: apply sniper SEO with specific terms like ‘handmade handbags’ or ‘organic material handbags’. This helps you stand out among the big players in the market, who often only use very broad keywords like ‘handbags’.
  4. Build content clusters to present your content clearly to search engines and visitors.
  5. Engage in linkbuilding to strengthen your online authority.
