The biggest differences between Bing and Google
Need information? Then search engines like Google and Bing offer the solution. They both fulfill the same task, yet they differ. Are you setting up your SEO strategy? Then start with the basics. Learn to understand both search engines so you can cleverly respond to how they work. Discover below what makes Bing different from the most well-known search engine in Belgium, or even the world.
Difference in technologies
Bing benefits, rightly so, from the innovations within Microsoft. These new techniques such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) enhance the user experience of the search engine. Microsoft integrates OpenAI into their chatbot and creates its own Bing Chat, the counterpart to ChatGPT. And Microsoft also developed a variant for DALL-E: the Image Creator. A handy AI tool to create image art based on the characteristics you type in. For example: generating an image where Trump and Biden are drinking a fresh beer together in a boat on a lake while fishing.
Microsoft aims to transform Bing into a new information platform. An all-knowing digital assistant that supports users in their daily lives and remarkably increases their user experience.
“In Belgium, Google shines in first place with a whopping 90% market share. While Bing, developed by giant Microsoft, has to be satisfied with a small 8%. The latter was the first search engine to launch an AI chatbot in 2023, which resulted in a growth of its market share.
Bing largely copies the way Google works, precisely because the latter is the largest and therefore probably the most optimal search engine. All SEO strategies that yield results with Google, therefore, automatically score in Bing.”
Difference in users
The target audience of Bing as a search engine differs from that of Google. But in what way exactly?
- Bing is the default search engine for Microsoft products. Just think of Windows PCs, tablets, smartphones, and even the Xbox game console. Products from this software giant therefore automatically set Bing as the default search engine.
- Bing’s target audience lies mainly with an older audience of desktop users. After all, a large number of desktops run on Microsoft Edge. This browser pushes Bing forward as the primary search engine. But many (older) users don’t know that you can choose for yourself which search engine is your favorite and default. Here, Google is likely leaving quite a bit of market share untapped.
- The highest usage of Bing is in America and India, and most Bing users are men.
Difference in competition
Google dominates, Bing does its best to follow. You can also see that in the number of pages within the search results. Many companies invest in an SEO strategy on Google because this search engine is the most popular and well-known. But because of this, the competition is high and you’re boxing against a lot of other websites.
Precisely because Bing is less popular, there is less competition between pages and you score relatively easily on this search engine.
Difference in algorithm
Both Google and Bing use a number of ranking factors. These decide whether your website scores well on the search results page. Discover the difference in the algorithm of both search engines:

- Bing also focuses on the content of your social media channels and includes the number of likes and comments in its algorithm.
- Limited use of the canonical tag. This leads to more frequent errors when setting the preferred page.
- Emphasizes a clear anchor text.
- Removes your page from the index after a while if you update too infrequently.
- Potentially higher conversion due to a smaller range of results. Users land on the right page faster and stay there longer.
- Insists on user experience.
- Crawls and understands images, audio, and video better.
- Is dependent on keywords in meta data and headings.

- More limited link with social media. Google extracts less concrete content from your profiles.
- Google analyzes the canonical tag very broadly and ensures an optimal result.
- backlinks play a fundamental role
- Mainly pushes large and well-known websites to the top of the SERP.
- Indexes pages and keeps them in the index.
- Insists on loading speed of pages.
- Focuses more on websites with a lot of written content.
- Prefers websites that are adapted for mobile devices.
SEO tools from Bing
Building a good SEO strategy includes the right tools. For analyzing your website and its performance, Google developed the Google Search Console. And to optimize your local SEO, you first need to create a Google Business Profile. But Bing also provides counterparts.
Bing Webmaster Tool
The BMT, Bing Webmaster Tool, provides the same insights as the Google Search Console. You analyze your website’s performance, check essential SEO data, and scan the indexing of your pages.
Bing focuses more on issues related to crawling and page statuses. Google prefers to sketch a more general picture of the health of your pages.

Bing Places For Business
Put your business on the map with Bing Places for Business. This way, the search engine knows what your business does, where it is located, and which target audience matches your offering. Compare how it works with a Google Business Profile. Both tools are essential for improving your local SEO.

Future of Bing and Google
With the arrival of AI, Bing is gaining ground step by step. Yet Google remains the largest and most popular search engine for most users. And Google will also soon integrate the latest artificial intelligence technologies. Both search engines might differ in operation, but they both focus on the same goal: providing users with an answer to their question. Let that be exactly what SEO is all about.
What the future looks like for both search engines remains unclear for now. One thing is very clear: keep concentrating on SEO as a long-term strategy. Then you’ll always be on the right track.
Why Digital Climax prefers to choose Google
At the moment, we mainly concentrate on using Google as a search engine. With its handy tools, it convinces us of its insights and operation. The Google Search Console presents our insights on a silver platter and our local SEO feasts on the benefits of your Google Business Profile. But probably most importantly: Google is and remains the absolute largest search engine with the biggest market share at this moment. This ensures a large reach and therefore also great chances of success.
