Key Components for Effective Video SEO
Videos are a huge part of today’s technology. They flash across our information channels and reach a significant number of viewers in no time. With video content, you can quickly and easily capture your target audience’s attention. You literally speak their language and hold their attention better, causing them to stay on your page longer.
Use the right SEO strategies to make your videos easy to find online. And focus on specific techniques to drive more traffic to your website or other channels. After all, videos also appear among the standard search results on Google. Just take a look at our example about “SEO webinar”:

4 Key Steps in Video SEO
Just as with traditional SEO, there are a number of key factors to consider when it comes to video SEO. These factors determine your performance in search engines. Take a close look at the following elements below before you start creating video content.
1) Keyword Research
Before you record and share a video, start by conducting keyword research and determining exactly who your target audience is—and which search terms they use when searching online. Identify which keywords have high search volume and incorporate them into your videos whenever possible. This tells Google exactly what your video is about and lets the search engine know when to match your content to a specific search query.
2) Metadata Optimization
Metadata conveys the correct content to Google. Only then can the search engine fully understand what your page and content are about and connect them to the relevant audience. Keep the following elements in mind:
- The internet is full of video content. So make sure to grab your users’ attention with a comprehensive title that encourages them to click through. Be original and stand out from the crowd.
- Include your keyword in the title, preferably at the beginning.
- Write a description that provides more details about your video. Let your viewers know what they’ll learn from your content and what to expect. Be sure to include your keyword and any synonyms.
- Add the right tags to your video. This helps Google better understand the content of your video message. We, as users, see the video footage with our own eyes and understand what the content is about. Google relies solely on words and therefore needs specific information.
3) Video Content and Structure
Decide in advance, in very specific terms, what you want to say in your message. Define your goal and outline how you’ll go about achieving it. Also, think about other videos that might complement your page and what topics you’ll cover in the future.
- Respond to the search intent of your audience. Do your users mainly need a clear explanation—for example, about how a particular device works? Then focus on informative videos. Or is your target audience looking for inspiration for a specific use—for example, how to best apply your latest mascara? Then tutorials are the solution. Always create relevant content tailored to your users. This will keep them engaged longer and encourage them to regularly search for new content on your page.
- End your messages with a compelling call to action (CTA). For example, encourage your users to contact you for a no-obligation quote. Direct them to the online store page to purchase a specific product. Or inspire them to click through to other videos on your page.
- Add your videos to the sitemap of your website, especially if you post multiple videos. This helps search engines understand which videos are related to a specific topic or keyword. It clarifies your page’s content cluster and improves your ranking on the SERP.
4) Share your video
Be sure to post your video on your own website. This way, you’ll offer your visitors relevant content and increase the likelihood that they’ll stay on your page. And share it in your blog posts and newsletters.
Are you aiming for a wide reach? Then be sure to post your video on YouTube and optimize it using YouTube SEO. Always add a link to this URL on your website and direct visitors from your page to the YouTube channel—and vice versa. If you don’t do this, you’ll miss out on the benefits of linkbuilding and backlinks.
Post your videos on your social media channels and always include a link to your own page. This encourages visitors to click through to other relevant content and boosts your website’s authority.
Visual and technical elements of your video
Thumbnail
First, let me explain: a thumbnail is a small image that shows what your video is about. It’s a kind of teaser that complements the title and convinces viewers to click through. Create your own thumbnail and decide what Google shows to potential visitors. Preferably use bright, eye-catching colors and make sure the topic and keyword of your video are front and center.

As a user, you see the title and immediately know what the video is about: SEO in 2024. The design of this thumbnail matches that of Digital Climax, including the image of “our little rocket.”
Subtitles for your video
Add subtitles to your video messages. This way, the spoken words will appear as text at the bottom of the screen. This enhances the user experience of your video and makes it more accessible to a wider audience. Think, for example, of people with hearing impairments or users who watch your video without sound.
Use a program like Kapwing to add subtitles to your video. Create an account and log in. Add a new video and select the correct file. Once your video has been uploaded, click “subtitles” and then “auto subtitles.” Kapwing will now add subtitles to your video. Keep in mind that speech recognition technology is constantly improving, but it’s still a good idea to check the subtitles yourself to make sure they’re accurate.

Transcribe your video
Video transcription is also an important part of video SEO. Just like with subtitles, this involves converting the video audio into text. You don’t display these words directly in your video, but rather as written text at the bottom of the description—or as a separate file.
Whether you realize it or not, Google understands content best in written form. Translate your moving images into clear and concrete text, including keywords. Make sure the search engine understands exactly what your video is about so it can crawl the content more effectively.
Add a short summary of your transcript to your video’s description to help Google understand your spoken content. The more the search engine understands your content, the better it will index and subsequently rank your pages. If desired, include a link to the full transcript in the description at the bottom of your video message.
Create a transcript in Word yourself. Open a new document, select the “Dictate” option in the top-right corner, and then select “Transcribe” below it. Choose your language and selecteither “Upload Audio” or “Start Recording.” With the first option, add your video, and Word will begin transcribing it into Dutch. Or choose “Start Recording” and let your video play in the meantime. Word will capture the audio and convert it into written text.

Tip
Here are two examples that will make it easier to create and analyze your video:

Measure the Success of Video SEO
You spend time recording and editing videos, go through all the steps to set everything up correctly, and share your message on one or more channels. Naturally, you’ll want to know how well your videos are performing. Find out how to analyze them in Google Search Console and YouTube Studio.
Analytics in Google Search Console
In Google Search Console , you can conveniently filter your results by video files. This lets you see how many users click on your video or what the average click-through rate (CTR) is. Please note that in Google Search Console, you can only analyze videos from your own website.

SEO Is Important for Your Videos, Too
Using videos enhances your SEO strategy. Not only do you entertain your target audience, but you also inform them in a clear and authentic way. Plus, some users prefer to hear and see something rather than read it themselves.
First, identify the key keyword for your message, incorporate it into your compelling title and eye-catching thumbnail, and ensure the transcript is accurate. Video content offers you, as an entrepreneur, nothing but benefits when you base it on good video SEO. It increases your website traffic and authority, which leads to better results on the SERP.
